Most product marketers don’t give people with disabilities a second thought. (I said “most”…remember that, Twitter.) Sure, they talk about “Universal Design”, but they don’t often consider people with significant cognitive or physical disabilities. That’s a shame. Think about it a different way: Product innovation thrives in constraint-rich environments. Those constraints fuel creative options that you would have no reason to consider otherwise.
Take the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Yes, it provides basic dignity and human connection for people with physical disabilities to be part of the gaming community. But just look at it. It’s cool AF. Both my kids (both gamers to varying degrees) think it’s actually *better* than the standard controllers they use.
Huh. An even better product. Who’d of thunk it. Nice work, Microsoft.
