I’m not sure a new CMO at Papa John’s is going to help. What is this? The fifth? I’ve lost track. The food industry is changing and “big food” is not as appealing as “local” or “fresh” or “niche” or, well, anything else. Consumers have so many more options for pizza today than they did when Papa John’s shook up the scene dominated by Pizza Hut and Dominos a couple of decades ago. Famous Dave’s barbecue chain realized the importance of its founder and brought him back to revitalize the chain. Perhaps Papa John can come back from the wilderness after his NFL snafu. Isn’t it funny how one person can make such a difference to the soul of a company? It shouldn’t surprise us, but it always seems to.
